Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy and Karb: The Tatra Lake Hike That Isn’t Morskie Oko

Po polsku: Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy i Karb: jesienna trasa przez Dolinę Gąsienicową

Everybody goes to Morskie Oko. If you want a Tatra lake with fewer crowds and a proper mountain feeling, go to the Gąsienicowa Valley instead. You get a dark glacial lake under the sharp peak of Kościelec, a famous mountain hut, and if you have the legs for it, the Karb pass with a view over two valleys at once.

Why it’s worth it

  • Two lakes, one loop. Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy (1624 m a.s.l.) and, from Karb, the green valley full of small ponds.
  • Real mountains, not a paved road. The trail to Morskie Oko is asphalt. This one is a stone path through the forest and up the meadows.
  • Murowaniec hut. One of the best-known huts in the Polish Tatras, perfect for soup and tea halfway.

The route

  1. Kuźnice → Hala Gąsienicowa (Murowaniec hut, about 1500 m a.s.l.): blue trail via Boczań and Skupniów Upłaz, around 2 hours. The first part is steep through the forest, then it opens up with views.
  2. Murowaniec → Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy: about 30 to 40 minutes on an easy path. The lake sits right under Kościelec, deep and dark, hence the name (Black Lake).
  3. Czarny Staw → Karb (1853 m a.s.l.): about 45 minutes to an hour of rocky climbing. Karb is the pass between Kościelec and Mały Kościelec. From the top you look down on both sides: the dark lake behind you and the green Gąsienicowa Valley with its ponds in front.
  4. Down to the hut through the valley and back to Kuźnice. The whole loop takes 6 to 7 hours with breaks.

When to go

Summer and early autumn are the best time. These photos are from mid-October, and you can see the first frost on the rocks near Karb. From late autumn to spring the upper part can be icy and needs winter gear and experience, so if you’re not sure, stop at the lake. It’s already a great day.
