Po polsku: Morskie Oko: jak dojść, co zobaczyć
If you see one photo of the Polish Tatra Mountains, it’s probably Morskie Oko: a deep green lake under huge granite walls. I was there again in September 2026, on a sunny day with almost no wind, and the water reflected the peaks like a mirror. Here is everything you need to know to visit it yourself.
Morskie Oko in a few facts
Morskie Oko („Eye of the Sea”) is the largest lake in the Tatras. It lies at about 1,395 m above sea level (the mountain hut on its shore is at 1,410 m), it covers almost 35 hectares and it is more than 50 metres deep. Local highlanders once believed it was connected to the sea by an underground tunnel, and that is where the name comes from.

How to get to Morskie Oko
Every trip starts at Palenica Białczańska, a car park and bus stop near the Slovak border, about 25 km from Zakopane.
- From Zakopane: small private buses („busy”) leave from the area near the main bus station and take around 40 minutes. They run often in season and you pay the driver.
- From Kraków: first get to Zakopane by bus or train (about 2 to 3 hours), then take a bus to Palenica. It’s a long day, but it’s doable. Many visitors prefer to stay a night in Zakopane.
- By car: the car park at Palenica usually has to be booked online in advance, especially in summer and at weekends.
From Palenica, a 9 km asphalt road leads up to the lake. The walk takes about 2 to 2.5 hours one way. It isn’t difficult, just long, so wear comfortable shoes and save some energy for the way back. You enter the Tatra National Park on the way, and you need a park ticket (you can buy it online).
The mountain hut
Right on the shore stands a wooden PTTK mountain hut (schronisko) from the early 20th century. It’s the perfect place for hot tea and a slice of szarlotka, Polish apple cake. In high season it gets very busy, so come early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

Walk around the lake
Most people stop at the hut, and that’s a pity. A trail goes all the way around the lake (about an hour), and from every side you get a different view. For the best reflections, come on a calm morning.
My tip: go 30 minutes higher
If you still have energy, follow the red trail up to Czarny Staw pod Rysami, another lake right under Rysy, the highest peak in Poland. It’s steep but short, about 30 minutes, and from up there Morskie Oko looks completely different. For me, this view is the best part of the whole trip.
